•RL.5/RI.5- Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of the structure an author uses in his or her narration, exposition, or argument, including whether the structure makes points clear, convincing, and engaging or creates mystery, tension, or surprise.
W.1- Construct an argument about what it means to be an American Teenager
Agenda:
•Share: What does it mean to be American? Is this (being an American) a good thing or bad thing? What makes it so?
•Collect syllabus
•Write “What do you know?” A-L (at least 5 letters)
Examples:
Assad, Syria’s dictator, used chemical weapons on his people
Beyonce’ can do no wrong in my wife’s eyes.

•American Teenagers work- Read samples
•Check out books for unit- The Great Gatsby, Of Mice and Men, or Into the Wild
•Hand out book marks- read per bookmark

Homework:
•“What do you know?” A-L- we will be sharing some of these next class period.
•Read Gatsby/OMAM Ch. 1; N2Wild Ch. 1-2
